4. Test Wallpaper Samples

Before committing to full panels of wallpaper, it's wise to test samples first to see how they complement your space.

Testing samples allows you to assess color accuracy, texture, adhesion and overall aesthetic, ensuring the perfect match for your home decor.

To temporarily test a non-pasted sample, simply tape it to the wall using painter's tape on each corner for a quick, non-permanent preview.

For a more thorough test, apply a wallpaper primer to an inconspicuous area, then paste the sample using a small amount of adhesive. Smooth it out to remove air bubbles and wait 24-48 hours to see how well it sticks, especially on textured walls. To remove, gently peel the sample off at a 90-degree angle using a scraper, being careful to avoid wall damage.

5. Measure Your Walls

Before ordering panels of wallpaper, it's essential to measure your walls accurately. Here are some tips on how to best measure your walls accurately:

Exclude crown molding and baseboards from the wall height calculation to prevent unnecessary excess wallpaper.

Measure the wall height on both sides of the wall to account for potential slight variations. Utilize the longest measurement to prevent gaps between the ceiling and the wallpaper.

Measure the wall width at both the top and bottom, accounting for potential slight variations.

Include doors, windows, or any other obstacles in the measured area to obtain comprehensive dimensions for ordering with accuracy.

How to Install Non-Pasted Wallpaper

1. Unpack Your Huggleberry Hill Wallpaper

Upon receiving your wallpaper, carefully unpack the panels and recycle the packaging. Unroll the panels and let them lie flat for 2-6 hours to help them uncurl, making installation smoother. If needed, gently weigh down the ends with clean, heavy items like books to keep the panels flat.

2. Prepare Your Walls

Before applying our wallpaper, make sure the surface is smooth and free of imperfections. Fill any holes and smooth out bumps to avoid affecting the wallpaper's appearance. Clean the walls thoroughly, especially in areas that may have dirt or grease. For safety, disconnect the power before removing any wall sockets or light switches.

3. Prime Your Walls

For best results and smoother installation and removal, always apply a wallpaper primer, especially on bare drywall. Wallpaper primers can be purchased from your local DIY store, and include items such as Roman PRO-977 Ultra Prime®.

Priming your walls before installation will ensure a smoother surface for the wallpaper to adhere to and helps in positioning and adhesion. As all walls and paint types are different, this step will provide the ideal surface to apply your wallpaper. It is an especially important step for renters as it drastically reduces the chances of any damage to walls on removal.

Please note: Since we cannot assure the condition of your walls and surfaces, Huggleberry Hill holds no liability for any damage that may occur to them during the application and removal of our wallpaper.

4. Get Your Wallpapering Tools Ready

You will need the following tools to install non-pasted wallpaper:

  • Wallpaper paste (not included, please purchase from your preferred DIY store)
  • A level or plumb line
  • A Roller or brush
  • A flexible smoothing tool with round corners
  • A sponge
  • A sharp utility knife

Installation Tip: To trim away any excess, make sure you are using a new strong blade and cut slowly and firmly along the crease to ensure a clean cut and to avoid fraying.

5. Install Your Wallpaper

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide for installing wallpaper:

  1. Layout the panels: Before starting, lay out the wallpaper panels to check their positioning.
  2. Draw a guide line: Use a pencil and level to draw a light vertical line on the wall (plumb line) as a guide for hanging. Mark a horizontal line to hang the first panel 1" (3 cm) into the corner. Keep the marks light to avoid them showing through light-colored wallpaper.
  3. Apply adhesive: Use a brush or roller to apply wallpaper paste evenly to the wall here the first two panels will go. We recommend Roman PRO-880 Ultra Clear®, or a similar adhesive. Only paste small sections at a time to avoid the adhesive drying out before hanging.
  4. Hang the first panel: Align the first panel at the top, making sure it’s straight. Leave about half an inch extra or more at the top and bottom for trimming. Smooth out air bubbles using a wallpaper smoothing tool, starting at the top and working your way down. Wipe any extra paste off with a damp cloth.
  5. Continue hanging: Align each new panel with the edge of the previous one, without overlapping. Smooth out air bubbles and clean any excess adhesive from the seams immediately with a damp cloth.
  6. Trim the edges: After all panels are hung, trim the excess at the ceiling and baseboard using a sharp utility knife and ruler. Always keep the knife steady and apply firm pressure while moving the ruler along.
  7. Let it dry: Avoid drafts and changes in temperature or humidity for 24 hours to let the wallpaper properly adhere.

Tip: We recommend using a quality wallpaper primer before installation to help minimize or eliminate wall damage on removal.

How to Care for Non-Pasted Wallpaper

1. Clean Scuffs and Marks

Unlike our peel-and-stick wallpaper, our non-pasted wallpaper is not washable with soap and water.

If you’d like to spot clean your non-pasted wallpaper, we suggest using a soft, non-abrasive cloth that has been lightly dampened with water. Gently wipe the affected area, applying minimal pressure. Persistent wiping can affect the texture and color of the wallpaper.

2. Avoid Sources of Direct Water, Heat and Sunlight

We recommend that our non-pasted wallpaper is for indoor use only. In order to avoid excessive fading over time, we don’t recommend installing our wallpaper in glass-roofed or glass-walled rooms which are prone to persistent direct sunlight.

Our wallpaper is suitable for use in the kitchen and bathroom as it can withstand humidity. Just make sure that all surfaces are clean and free of grease before application. We don’t recommend installing our wallpaper near sources of direct water, heat or open flame, such as the backsplash to a stovetop and sink or inside baths and showers.

If you have any queries, please contact our Customer Care Team.

3. Inspect Wallpaper Regularly

Regularly inspecting your non-pasted wallpaper is key to keeping your walls looking fresh and well-maintained. Look out for any signs of peeling edges, air bubbles, or lifting corners. If you spot any issues, apply wallpaper paste to the loose areas and gently press the wallpaper back in place. Smooth out air bubbles using a wallpaper smoother or a credit card, working from the center outwards.

By regularly checking and caring for your non-pasted wallpaper, you’ll keep your walls looking beautiful for years to come.

Begin at a corner at the top or bottom where you can get a good grip on the edge of the wallpaper.

2. Peel Off the Wallpaper

As you peel off the wallpaper, use a plastic scraper to lift and loosen it from the wall. Work downwards in small sections. Once you start peeling, the wallpaper panel should start coming off in large sections

If any small pieces of wallpaper remain, you can use a wallpaper remover solution and apply it on the wall according to the manufacturers instructions. Using a flat scraper, gently remove any remaining wallpaper from the wall.
