Testing Non-Pasted Wallpaper Samples

Why do i need to test a sample before making a larger purchase of wallpaper?

Testing a sample before committing to a full purchase allows you to see how the wallpaper’s color, texture, and design in your actual space.

Lighting, wall texture, and surrounding decor can all affect the final look. By testing a sample, you can also check how seams will appear, ensuring you’re happy with the overall aesthetic.

This helps avoid surprises and ensures you're confident in your choice before ordering a larger quantity.

How do I test a sample of non-pasted wallpaper?

This type of wallpaper requires paste for installation and is intended to be a more permanent fixture.

The best way to temporarily test a non-pasted sample is without pasting it to the wall. Use pieces of painters tape on each corner of the sample and stick it to the wall. This will give you a quick preview without permanence.

To test a non-pasted sample by pasting it the wall, find an inconspicuous area to test on. We recommend using a wallpaper primer on your test area first to protect the paint underneath. Apply a small amount of wallpaper paste to your test area and then adhere the sample on top, smoothing down to eliminate air bubbles. Wait 24-48 hours to assess how well the wallpaper sticks to your wall, especially if the wall is textured. To remove the sample, start at a corner and, using a scraper, gently peel the sample off at a 90 degree angle. Peel slowly and avoiding tugging to prevent wall damage.

Note: Our wallpaper is shipped rolled. To flatten out your samples, remove them from the packaging and place them flat for 2 - 6 hours. Use weighted items like books in the corners to help them return to their original shape.

How do i test the appearance of seams on a non-pasted sample?

The appearance of seams can vary based on the wallpaper color, pattern, your personal preference and the style you're aiming for.

To get a sense of how the seams will look, place two samples side by side on a smooth surface. If you only have one sample, cut it in half and align the edges.

Testing this on your wall or a similar flat surface allows you to see how the seams blend with your lighting and decor.

Some people don't mind more visible seams, while others like a more seamless look—it all depends on your style!

Measuring-Up & Ordering Non-Pasted Wallpaper

How do I measure my walls?

Here are a few tips for accurately measuring your walls:

  • Exclude crown molding and baseboards from your height measurement to avoid ordering extra wallpaper unnecessarily.
  • Measure the height on both sides of the wall, as there may be slight variations. Use the taller measurement to avoid gaps between the ceiling and wallpaper.
  • Measure the width at both the top and bottom to account for any differences.
  • Be sure to include doors, windows, or any obstacles in your measurements to ensure accurate ordering.

How much non-pasted wallpaper do I need?

Our non-pasted wallpaper measures 30 inches in width and is available in varying lengths to accommodate a number of common wall heights, including 4ft (48"), 6ft (72"), 8ft (96"), 9ft (108"), 10ft (120") and 12ft (144").

To determine the required amount of wallpaper, measure the width and height of each wall you intend to wallpaper. As some walls are uneven, we recommend measuring both at the top and bottom of your walls for total width and at both vertical ends of your wall for height - then use the longest and widest measurements taken.

We recommend you also include 10% extra in your final measurements as a failsafe.

Once you have the height measurement, compare it with the panel lengths we offer and round up to the nearest foot. For example, if your wall is 8ft (96") for example, simply select the 9ft panel length.

Once you have the total width measurement in inches, simply divide it by 30" in order to get the number if panels you require. Round up to the next panel if needed. For example, if your total wall width measures 160", calculate 160 divided by 30, which equals 5.33. As this isn't a whole number, round up to 6. So a total of 6 panels are required to cover the wall.

Note for Textured Walls: Our tests have shown that our non-pasted wallpaper can adhere to a variety of lightly textured walls. If it stays securely in place without peeling and you are satisfied with the appearance, you can confidently place your order for full panels.

can i install non-pasted wallpaper on concrete?

Applying non-pasted wallpaper directly to unsealed concrete is not recommended, as the surface is typically rough and porous, which can prevent proper adhesion. However, if the concrete is smooth, sealed, and primed with a suitable primer, you can successfully apply non-pasted wallpaper. Be sure to prepare the surface well by filling in any cracks or holes, sanding it smooth, and applying a wallpaper primer to ensure the best results.

Can non-pasted wallpaper be installed in the bathroom and kitchen?

Ensure the room is well-ventilated and avoid placing wallpaper in areas with direct water contact, like near sinks or showers. Adding a protective sealant can help make it more durable in humid conditions.

We do not recommended applying non-pasted wallpaper directly to a backsplash behind a sink or oven, as it may be exposed to water, heat, and steam, which could damage the wallpaper over time.

Can I hang non-pasted wallpaper on the ceiling?

Yes, you can hang non-pasted wallpaper on the ceiling. The process is similar to wall installation, but it may require extra care and assistance due to the overhead application. Having a second person to help can make the process easier and more efficient.

Can I install non-pasted wallpaper over existing wallpaper?

Applying wallpaper on top of old wallpaper can result in poor adhesion and an uneven finish, as the underlying wallpaper may peel, bubble, or show through. How do I install non-pasted wallpaper?

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide for installing wallpaper:

  1. Layout the panels: Before starting, lay out the wallpaper panels to check their positioning.
  2. Draw a guide line: Use a pencil and level to draw a light vertical line on the wall (plumb line) as a guide for hanging. Mark a horizontal line to hang the first panel 1" (3 cm) into the corner. Keep the marks light to avoid them showing through light-colored wallpaper.
  3. Apply adhesive: Use a brush or roller to apply wallpaper paste evenly to the wall here the first two panels will go. We recommend Roman PRO-880 Ultra Clear®, or a similar adhesive. Only paste small sections at a time to avoid the adhesive drying out before hanging.
  4. Hang the first panel: Align the first panel at the top, making sure it’s straight. Leave about half an inch extra or more at the top and bottom for trimming. Smooth out air bubbles using a wallpaper smoothing tool, starting at the top and working your way down. Wipe any extra paste off with a damp cloth.
  5. Continue hanging: Align each new panel with the edge of the previous one, without overlapping. Smooth out air bubbles and clean any excess adhesive from the seams immediately with a damp cloth.
  6. Trim the edges: After all panels are hung, trim the excess at the ceiling and baseboard using a sharp utility knife and ruler. Always keep the knife steady and apply firm pressure while moving the ruler along.
  7. Let it dry: Avoid drafts and changes in temperature or humidity for 24 hours to let the wallpaper properly adhere.

Tip: We recommend using a quality wallpaper primer before installation to help minimize or eliminate wall damage on removal.

Caring for Non-Pasted Wallpaper

How do I care for non-pasted wallpaper?

It's simple! To keep your non-pasted wallpaper looking fresh, we recommend you inspect it for signs of wear and tear every 6 months. Clean off any dirt and marks as soon as you see them. Dust over your wallpaper regularly with a dry cloth or duster.

Can I spot clean non-pasted wallpaper?

Unlike our peel-and-stick wallpaper, our non-pasted wallpaper is not washable.

If you’d like to spot clean your wallpaper, we suggest using a soft, non-abrasive cloth that has been dampened with water. Make sure that all water is squeezed from the cloth and gently wipe the affected area, applying minimal pressure. Persistant wiping can affect the texture and color of the wallpaper.

Is non-pasted wallpaper safe near near sources of direct heat or sunlight?

Our non-pasted wallpaper is treated to be fire retardant, meaning it is designed to resist the spread of fire. It has a fire rating of "C" (according to the EN 13501-1 standard) indicating that it meets specific European safety standards for fire resistance. While it offers some protection against fire, it’s important to note that it is not fireproof but can slow down the spread of flames in case of a fire.

Exposure to heat can cause the adhesive to weaken, while sunlight may cause fading or discoloration over time.

To keep your wallpaper looking its best, avoid installing it near radiators, ovens, or areas that receive a lot of direct sunlight.
